Troubleshooting

Common issues and solutions when using HelixMind.

Troubleshooting

Installation

npm Permission Error:

sudo npm install -g helixmind
# Or better: set npm prefix to a local directory

Node.js Version: HelixMind requires Node.js 18+. Check with node --version.

API Key Issues

"Invalid API Key":

helixmind config get apiKey # Check
helixmind config set apiKey sk-ant-.. # Re-set

Key formats: Anthropic sk-ant-..., OpenAI sk-..., Groq gsk_...

Rate Limiting: HelixMind uses automatic exponential backoff. For persistent errors: check API plan limits or switch to Ollama for unlimited local inference.

Spiral Memory

"Database Locked": Close multiple HelixMind instances. Only one instance per database.

Slow Embeddings: First start downloads the model (~22MB). Cached afterwards.

Large Database: Check with helixmind spiral status, compact with helixmind spiral compact.

Brain Visualization

Not Opening: Check port with /brain. If busy, HelixMind picks a random port.

WebSocket Error: Browser extensions (ad blockers, privacy tools) can block WebSocket to localhost.

Ollama

"Connection Refused": Start ollama serve. Check: curl http://localhost:11434/api/version

Out of Memory: Use a smaller model: helixmind config set model qwen2.5-coder:7b

Windows

SQLite EBUSY: Close all HelixMind instances, delete .helixmind/spiral.db-wal and -shm files.

MCP Server

Server Not Starting: Test npx -y spiral-context-mcp directly. Ensure Node.js 18+.

Editor Not Connecting: Check MCP config location, restart editor, check editor MCP logs.
